What a missing nutrient value really means
Every number traces to one specific USDA FoodData Central food record. Missing values stay missing; raw and cooked foods are not treated as interchangeable.
A blank in a food database is not the same as zero. It can mean the nutrient was not measured, was not included in that release, or was not reported for that particular record.
Why it matters
If fiber is absent for a Foundation Foods record, replacing it with zero would bias every comparison and calculator total. This prototype displays “not reported” instead.
How totals are handled
When a selected food lacks a value, the portion calculator does not claim a complete total for that nutrient. Use the linked original record to see precisely which source was used. Similar-sounding foods can have different coverage and preparation states.
